Dr. Arunava Ghosh

Dr. Arunava Ghosh is a consultant endocrinologist, diabetologist and obesity specialist based in Kolkata. He holds a DM in Endocrinology & Metabolism from IPGMER & SSKM Hospital — one of the few centres in eastern India offering the super-speciality qualification — following an MD in General Medicine from North Bengal Medical College.

Training

His post-doctoral training between 2020 and 2023 was in the Department of Endocrinology & Metabolism at IPGMER, where he completed a pilot study comparing electronic and manual pillboxes for medication adherence in type 2 diabetes. Before that, as a post-graduate and then senior resident in general medicine at North Bengal Medical College, he studied echocardiographic changes in severe anaemia — work that won an award paper at EZAPICON, Siliguri in 2018.

He has completed the ACTION 100 programme in diabetes care at Boston University School of Medicine, the Joslin Diabetes Center's NAFLD certification, and the ICMR Basic Course in Biomedical Research, and is a member of RSSDI, the Endocrine Society of India and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology.

How the practice works

Endocrine conditions are chronic. Diabetes, thyroid disease, osteoporosis and pituitary disorders are managed across years and decades, and the value of specialist care depends almost entirely on whether the patient keeps coming back. That is a practical problem in West Bengal, where reaching a super-specialist has usually meant a day's travel to Kolkata.

So the practice is arranged the other way round. Alongside hospital OPDs in Kolkata — at CMRI, Narayana Memorial, EEDF, Kasturi Medical Centre and Apollo Clinic Shakuntala Park, with his own clinics at Behala and Haridevpur — Dr Ghosh runs a fixed rota of 65 chambers across 10 districts, from Uluberia and Tamluk to Cooch Behar, Rampurhat and Falakata. Some are weekly; many run on a monthly rotation, which is why the timings on this site show which weeks of the month each sitting falls on.

Clinical interests

Diabetes in all its forms, including type 1 diabetes and diabetes technology; obesity and medical weight management, together with the metabolic syndrome and fatty liver disease that travel with it; acromegaly and pituitary disease; and osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease.

Obesity in particular now accounts for a large and growing share of the clinic. It is treated here as the metabolic disease it is — investigated properly, and managed with structured nutrition, activity, and modern pharmacotherapy or surgical referral where those are indicated — rather than as a matter of willpower. Much of the rest of what an endocrine clinic sees, from type 2 diabetes and fatty liver to PCOS/PMOS and subfertility, improves when the weight does.

These are also the areas in which he has published — on the efficacy of long-acting octreotide in acromegaly, on novel mutations causing severe hypoparathyroidism, on primary hyperparathyroidism in pregnancy, and on familial hypercholesterolaemia.

He is a co-author of the Department of Endocrinology's Dynamic Test Protocols at IPGMER, has spoken at national CMEs, and continues to see referred cases at the tertiary level.
